It's not truly open source, but if you want, you can help developing the new engine and/or create graphics and other things.

Do you know C/C++, Allegro or DJGPP?

The arrakis engine are free for use too?

the engine of Arrakis 1.12 is open source, however, if you are not a programmer you can still modify the graphics, as long you use the game palette you can change everything in the game except the prices etc.
