Just wondering if any of you have played this game, and if so, how did you find it? I have a lot of problems with the difficult controls of this game, so if anything, some tips would be nice, like how to open large boxes and chests...

I always liked Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) better myself.  Same idea, but with a more concrete (yet still fairly non-linear) storyline.  The controls are better too, I find.

Anyway, I recommend going to the key listings and writing them down/printing them off, until you memorize them.  Or you could get a programmable gamepad and bind the more difficult controls to the buttons so you'll have them all at hand beside your keyboard.  My Logitech gamepad can do multiple key functions, so you can do shift+button commands, like (Q)uaff potion instead of (q)uit.

I prefer Angband to Nethack, I have no idea why, I just do.

One good thing about Angband is that you can make your own variant, so there are many different ways you can play Angband, i.e. ZAngband, or TOME, have different mechanics than Angband and each other.

I like ADOM as well, but I found that a bit to hard, (I can't even pick things up and pay for them :P)
