Hey guys, I've not been playing this game for quite some time now, last time was like 3 years ago. I've read trough the forums and download the XWISC tool, in the ''getting online'' thread it stated I had to change the upper line into the adress of the server I want to play on.

So, I changed the upper line into:

72.17.137.93

When I hit the ''SET (XWIS)''-button it says: ''Your host file could not be updated.''

I try to hit Reset (WOL), same message.

And also when I try to login into the game it says I have a bad password, can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance.

The message you get is a hint that either your HOST file is read only, or its...well...dunno. Can only be read only really, as far as I can guess. Programs like Spybot can do this for you as a security measure.

Just use the Getting Online thread to find where your file is, and right click on it and untick the box that says Read-Only. Hit Apply and OK, then run the XWIS tool again. That should do it. To test what server your emp will try to log in to, go to Cmd Prompt (Start Menu, Run, type "cmd") and then type "ping servserv.westwood.com" (dont include quotes in any of that.

It should repeat the IP address of the server, and you can see that it matches the one you want to be on, in this case 72.17.137.93.

Hope that helps.

Unfortunatly, I tried all the things you said, the ''read only'' wasn't checked. When I run cmd, I immidieatly get an error it isn't appropriate for windows or MS-dos, no idea what to do now. Thanks for the tips, but unfortuantly they didn't work :(.

Also, if I try to ''test'' the connection with the server in the XWISC tool, it doesn't react anymore and I need to manually end the program using ALT+CTRL+DEL.

Anymore suggestions would be welcome...

ok, so the file was actually there ?

Can you manually check the file for the lines needed, as shown in the Getting Online Guide.

Also, going to Start Run and typing cmd, did the cmd dialog box come up or not ? At which point does it give you the error ?

Just for my info, what OS are you using ?

Here's an image of the XWISC tool, I'm running it on a Windows XP computer.

When I run cmd, it comes up, but immidiatly shows an error, saying it can't be run for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.

I hope I've been clear.

Sounds like some sort of error in your windows installation.

Getting an error when typing "cmd" in the Run menu doesnt sound right (well it isnt).

Can you confirm that the file in C:Windowssystem32driversetc called HOSTS is there ? That is the important file, not the XWIS connection tool. If it is there we can change it manually.

Ill try to talk you through changing your HOSTS file manually.

1 If it is there, rename it, if it isnt there, the just start at step 2.

2 Make a new text file (right click, new, text document)

3 Edit it, add in the line:

        72.17.137.93 servserv.westwood.com

4 Save the file, close it, and then rename it to HOSTS. Make shure you saved it in the directory for the HOSTS file as above.

Let me know how thats going.

I've been trying to find the system32 folder, and I had to use the Find program to get there. Well here's some screens of what's in there.

emperor010gk.jpg

In the folder is no ''etc'' map present, any idea how come?

In this folder I created the HOSTS file as you directed. Any thoughts what I've done wrong? Or is missing?

ok, try this, open My computer, go to Tools | Folder Options | View tab

Scroll down until you find the setting Hide Protected Operating System files ( recommended).

Make shure it is unchecked.

Also 2 above that one is Show Hidden files and folders, just make shure that is selected, although I guess it already is.

It is important we find the file.

Copy the line below into your my computer address bar when you have done the above.

C:Windowssystem32driversetc

Let me know if you can now see the HOSTS file.

Which folder did you create the HOSTS file in ? It has to be in the C:Windowssystem32driversetc folder, if it isnt there, after you have done the above to unhide it, then create it ( I dont believe it will not be there, then again, you get strange messages on your cmd so maybe it is messed up).

Good luck.

Hmm, if I enter the line I do get there, but I can't get there manually. What I mean is: If I open the WINDOWS map, there is no system32 map present. Though if I entered that line you showed, I do ge t there, and the HOSTS file is present there too now. If I open it with Word it shows the following IP adress: 72.17.137.93 which is the correct one for the Emperor Server, if I'm not mistaken.

Any other thaughts? Really losing hope now ^^;

It means you have the setting "Dont show hidden files and folders" switched on, in the same Tools Options menu in My computer under the view menu.

I honestly cant think why you would have such funny occurances. Going back to the basics, how about firewalls ? Describe your setup (broadband of some sort ? Do you have a router ? etc..).
