I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP, and now my primary CD drive doesn't have autoplay.  Without using powertoys XP (which I'd like to avoid using for as long as possible), how can I turn on autoplay?

Open your registry and find the key below.

Change to value of 'Autorun', or create a new DWORD value if it doesn't already exist, and set the data to equal '0' for Autorun disabled.

Registry Settings

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCDRom]

Value Name: Autorun

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Value Data: (0=disable, 1=enable)

It seems to be on already.  But it doesn't seem to work very well.  It might be my CD-Rom drive though, since sometimes I get an icon for my cds, and sometimes not.  Maybe the lens needs cleaning.
