I wonder whether we can speak of actually TWO Duniverses, on being the one depicted in FH's books and the other that evolved from all the Westwood's Dune 2 stuff ??? They have something in common, but this something is somewhat vague.

Imagine the first Dune RTS would be like Warcraft - I mean melee units basically, some extension of what we observe in Cryo's Dune (with real-time combat). The whole RTS genre could be entirely different.

Another question is, whether the prequels are to be actually included into FH's Duniverse.

If you want a text about the "canon" of Dune, written by the author of the Dune Encyclopedia.

If you want some ... erm... opinion from which in my opinion those milking Frank Herbert's creation: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Hollow/6363/duenc.htm

Personally, I don't care too much about the definition of the word "canon" per se. I just make a huge difference between Frank's material (and the encyclopedia) with its quality, and what is found in Anderson's stuff which is of a different nature. Different content, same form. Fanfiction can be well done and so on, but there is a difference between one author and another, and a difference often very serious.

In fact, one could say that each person has his own view of the Duniverse, thus creating new Duniverses (and a "fanfictionary" Duniverse from each person), but this would be in the same sense that we say that each of us has his own version of our physical reality.

PS: Good stuff about this also at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Hollow/6363/duenc.htm
