Don't expect to much of a media laptop is you have just 1000$.

You can have a mobile radion with 256MB although it would cost you about 1500 Euro's.

For brands. . Dell's have issues with battery life .. especially after a year. So if you'r gon'na buy a Dell have a look at the warranty upgrade and include your batteries in that warranty. Or just buy extra batteries. ;)

[ it's also important to think of how long you are gon'na use it. I don't plan to have a laptop for more then a year. 1,5 - 2 years max. So warranty for anywhting langer then a year is pointless

Asus has good notebooks. So does HP. I personally prefer HP and have some bad experiance with Toshiba laptops.

I don't like low-end notebooks like Medion. So can't tell you much about them.

With my own HP laptop I didn't buy extra warranty. ( european models come with 2 years of hardware warenty ) And sofar on 2 laptops never needed the warranty.

Thanks gryphon. What about Toshiba? In fact I was looking one of them. Someone told me Acer could be good, or some less mainstream brands. If you wanna give a look:
