Saddam Hussein's former deputy Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri, who was the most wanted official from the former regime, has been arrested on the outskirts of Tikrit, an Iraqi defence ministry official said.

"Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri was arrested on the outskirts of Tikrit," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The capture was announced after police in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit, north of Baghdad, said Saturday that US forces had new leads in their hunt for the former vice-president.

A police officer had told AFP the search had focused on neighbourhoods east of Tikrit following information Ibrahim recently had a blood transfusion in a local clinic.

Ibrahim is ranked number six in the deck of cards of most wanted officials issued after last year's US-led invasion of Iraq.

The US military placed a bounty of 10 million dollars on his head last year, accusing him of financing insurgent groups.

Excellent. Hopefully, this'll keep the attacks down for long enough to get together a successful Iraqi government.

Though how you can be ranked number six in a deck of cards composed of four suits is beyond me.

I wasn't necessarily talking about a threat, nor co-ordination.

I meant the way we treat each other.

He was the king of clubs, I believe.  Second highest card of second highest suit (apparently) means five cards are above him.

In Baghdad, meanwhile, an Interior Ministry spokesman said that medical tests on a man being held in custody showed he is not former president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s deputy, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, ending conflicting claims about his purported arrest.

The man is a relative of al-Douri, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sabah Kadhim, and was wanted by authorities, but not an important member of Saddam's ousted regime.

You mean third highest suit?

(Wrong thread, by the way)

Wow, how on earth did that happen?  That was silly.  No, I did mean the second highest: if he is the 6th highest, there are 4 aces and 1 king above him (total of 5 cards), leaving him in 6th.  I'll stop posting off-topic now...  Is it still off topic if it's just in the wrong place?

I heard that it was a mistaken identity. So they did not catch him.

I think?

Not only was it mistaken, this is the second time they have mistakenly arrested someone believed to be Ibrahim Al-Douri! (or so I recall, don't have a link handy)
