Free antivirus program

I dont know where else to post this, so Ill post it here since a lot of you guys are great with this stuff.

Basically I am looking for a free anti virus program, till I can afford a real one. Do any of you know where I can find one? it would be a big help. :)

You came to the right place.  I just happen to know of the best free anti-virus program there is.  Take a look here.  AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 FREE EDITION, it's called.

Its features include a Drive Scanner, Removable Devices Scanner, Resident Shield (stops viruses if they try to enter your system), Auto-Updater (can be turned off if it nips your head like it does mine :P), Virus Vault and Rescue Disk.

I swear by this program.  I scanned my HDD with Norton and McAfee and found nothing.  I download this baby and find 44 viruses.  Probably doing a song and dance.  Trust me, AVG rocks.

It has actually screwed up my computer on several occasions...

Please use Trend-Micro's House Call instead. It's free, has better handling of viruses( can repair more files than AVG, which seems to want to delete all infected files(*.exe) ), and is a web service.

Which is all well and good, as long as you don't have a virus that stops you from going on to the internet, or one that hijacks your browser and re-installs itself.

Uhm, I have never encoutered that virus before.

And AVG has made my life hard. Once, I couldn't log on to Windows!

I had to do some tricky safe mode thingies, and get rid of the 'plague', and then everything worked.

The windows login exe file was infected, and AVG had to shut it down to avoid further harm...

OK then... but wasn't it a good thing that AVG was there to stop you from harming your PC?  That's all I'm trying to say.  You can't get enough protection from viruses.  AVG has never done me any harm is all I can say... and it is recommended by PC Gamer magazine, or something.  Best just to see what suits you and choose accordingly, TMA-1.
