Oh, and how exactly can an ideology be totalitarian? A system can be totalitarian, and it can shove a certain ideology down people's throats. But an ideology - in other words, a collection of ideas - can't really take any action. I can guarantee that books won't start flying after you with guns.

Having said that, however, I have to point out that marxism - an ideology which supports democracy in its highest forms (namely socialism and communism) - doesn't really go well with totalitarian systems. The stalinists were renowned for doing the exact opposite of what they preached. Take the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", for example. They preach democracy, but that's not what they practice...

And by the way, nobody explains the opposition between marxism and stalinism better than Leon Trotsky. He dedicated the last 10 years of his life to fighting the totalitarian Soviet Union and saving marxism from Stalin's grasp. I gave you a link to The Revolution Betrayed hundreds of times - you really should read it some day.

...now, can we please get back on topic? I was talking about political definitions before you came in with your silly comment.

We are making definitions based on words themselves. It was the way of Marx' thinking. Fact it was later adopted and detailed by others doesn't change the fact.

Let's have another definition, to make ourselves clear:

Totality - (lat totus, whole) ideology affecting every (or significantly higher than in case of usual ideologies) part of social interaction or private life; mostly defined until it's suggested to usuality; this includes religions and some political systems
