There's nothing wrong with being happy to be a member of your country, to show some pride in its successes, with the caveat that you be ready to acknowledge and criticise the ills of its past and present accordingly.

Emperor Harkonnen; do American achievements count partially as European achievements by association, since America is a descendant of Europe? Or should we term it, instead of "European" culture and history, as Western culture and history? Personally, I feel that Western civilization has brought mankind its greatest goods (modern medicine, computers) and greatest ills (the atom bomb, world war two) almost equally. If you're going to bring up the topic about Europe, toss in the rest of the West for good measure.

If it is racist to criticize other cultures, is it not also wrong to criticize other beleifs? What's the difference? The person in question still feels attacked the same way!

yeah I would say we could say america is counted as european when it comes to this subject. so let's say the West.

well if you critizise other beliefs it is certainly racism. everything which is negative towards people with the slightest different skin color is racism.

Ditto to Nema.  The most important thing about history is that you learn from it.  Whatever that history may be isn't something you should or even could feel pride, shame, or responsibility for.

Racism is a ticklish word that you cannot use for beliefs and religion. You should say intolerance...

hey it is not me who is saying this, it is many people in Norway who I find intolerant and narrowminded. they can't understand that when you critisize a person of another skin color than your own it is not necessarily racism.
