Throughout history mankind has always had a belief in the devine.

The vast majority of people believe or have a theory on the existence of a higher being,God/creator based on Faith.

Mankind IMO have a built in need to belive that there is a greater purpose to life than merely exist and procreate.

Most religons belive that our physical state is merely a stepping stone to a life beyond the grave.

What if not "God" is behind this need for us as a spieces.

Maybe this is a consequence of our rational minds (whether it is used for rationality or irrationality is up for debate). With a rational mind, you begin to notice how wonderful and mysterious a lot of things are in this world. In which case, with a scientifically dwarfed knowledge-base you might begin to attribute these mysteries to a being or beings beyond what we can see. For example, the lightning bolt - the power of the gods.

Religion grew out of storytelling, storytelling was entwined with culture. Memetic evolution means that the prehistoric societies most likely to survive are those with strong cultures, which could retain lessons such as how to hunt, and so on. Thus, religion also grew to teach how it was right to do things both practically, and also with respect to what was perceives to be the creators of fortune (in both senses of the word respect).

We also have a predisposed need to believe in something, be it pride in our clan - or its culture - driving us to be happy to die to serve the greater good of our fellows, and, increasingly, for our culture (and so religion) as well.
