There have been a few threads around here posting various numbers of the number of people killed during ww2, so in order to clarify this for any future arguments, and prevent side arguements about the number of deaths, here they are, courtesy of "Western Civilization: A Brief History" by Jackson J. Spielvogel, a textbook written for university courses in western civilization.

WW2 Casualties:

Approximatly 17 million combatants killed.

Approximatly 18 million civilians killed.

(some estimates raise to 50 million total, this does not include deaths before 1939).

Nazi civilian killings:

1 million Jews murdered by the SS mobile killing forces.

4-5 million more killed in death camps.

90% (or 2 out of every 3) of all European Jews murdered.

9-10 million other, non-Jewish, civilians murdered by shooting, overworking, or starvation.

These deaths can be divided into the following categories:

40% of all European Gypsies (approximatly 400,000) which were executed in the death camps.

4 million Poles, Ukranians, and Russians killed doing slave labour.

4 million Soviet prisoners killed in captivity.

Plus other Slaves, professionals (lawyers, clergy, civil leaders, judges), and homosexuals, numbers are not available.
