Here's some info from Phillipe Baude on the Dune Generation's English design team forum:

"In Dune Generations there will be shields, but only for some units.

There won't be the atomic reaction beetween laser and shield because it's too powerful.

Players are able to use their atomic but they can expect a retribution from the Imperium (here comes the Sardaukar ) unless if they've been attacked first by an atomic weapon

You can not strike the ground from the orbital area."

In other news, the Sci-Fi channel will be airing David Lynch's "DUNE" Sunday at 8:00 PM EST. I'm not sure if its the extended version or the regular one so post a comment if you find out. :)
