RTS games without RPS elements

Is it possible, he asked?

Depending on what you mean with (rock paper siccor) RPS elements.

You don't know, he asked?

Do you mean the mechanical or the artificial RPS elements?

You know, tank beats buggy beats soldier beats rocket soldier beats tank.

Then you probably mean the artificial RPS elements. In that case I say Yes!

Mechanical RPS:

RPS achieved by different physical unit statistics like;

Speed and Range.

And very advanced games have unit size with terrain influence as well.

Overkill and piercing through armor are also in this category.

Artificial RPS:

RPS achieved by simply saying weapon X has 50% effect against (the armor of) unit Y. And weapon Y has 150% effect. Regardless of all the other statistics.

Having air and ground targets sounds like mechanical but is indeed artificial. Unless the game really makes use of the third dimension and gravity.

But the question is: Can a RTS game do without both RPS?

And would they be fun?

I often see that some simple flash games lack the use of Mechanical RPS. But then have a lot of Artificial RPS.

And very old RTS games like Dune 2 and Warcraft 2 only give notice of mechanical RPS. (even though WC2 does have 2 types of attacks)

Is there any game out there that is a RTS but has no RPS system whatsoever?
