There are some locomotive data files floating around (maybe the ones I got at Hawk & Badger?) that have a column called "free weight". For some time, I thought it said something about how much a loco weighed, like dead weight. Now I think it's about loco power, like how much cargo can be hitched to a train before its level-track speed drops below max (and how much more can be added before it drops more).

If I am right, then the locos with big free-weight numbers are the heavy-haulers for 6-car coal trains.
