There is info on this in the "House" prequels. I think that is the only place it explains the story of someone transforming to a guild navigator.

I'm not sure, but they would slowly consume more and more spice until they are put in the thing the guild navigators are finally put it.

I had totally forgotten that it was in the prequels, thanks! I think I will reread them when I find the time.

But another related question, how long would a guild navigator live? I heard they said 4000 years in the Dune movie extended edition. any references in the books?
