In my never ending quest to learn about PC's, I subscribe to a few mags. I found this in the current issue of CPU mag. It's called FS Auto Start. It is a neat little tool that shuts down all background Apps and Services, Defrags your RAM, launches EMP, and then waits for you to get done playing. When you quit the game it puts your PC back the way it was.

I am running XP sp2 and it works great.  I don't know if it will work with Vista.

You can get it here- http://www.fs-gs.com/downloads.htm

It's much safer than using Msconfig since none of the changes are permanent. If your PC isn't a rocket this helps with playing EMP. (or any other game for that matter)

Best part is it's free.

If your not sure about how to configure the services in the utility, check here- http://www.blackviper.com/index.html

I used to set up Hardware profiles based on the recommendations you will find in this site. But that required a re-boot every time you want to play a game. This is MUCH easier.
