Yup... for some paranormal reason it's what comes to my mind right now.

Sometimes, it seems that someone wont get convinced by anything even just a little. It applies also to ourselves, puting in doubt all the relyability of what we know. I have my idea about why this happens:

1-

I think that someone gets a whole scheme of ideas, and over this schemes of schemes, and schemes of schemes of schemes, and... so on. This person is universalizing the chumps of the whole that he has to a global induction of a whole based on these chumps. Of course, it's all within the referencial (angle) in which he is macerating.

Thus, when a single element from out of this global vision comes, it easily bumps on the often bulky and static structure.

The only way to truly evaluate another idea, for this person, would be to see it within its whole structure, which is a network of ideas, a system.

2-

In parallel, this brings to another problematic that is important in this context. A yound fellow goes to an Indian guru. He says to him "I wish to get better, it is my dearest wish. I want to follow your teaching." So the old man answers "Ok. With these deepest conviction and this will, you will go take a bath in the Gange tommorrow between 8h00 and 10h00. You will wash your whole body BUT you wont ever think to your belly." Will the man be able to have control on his thaught and CONTROL his mind or, in fact, wont it be something exterior to him that will direct this? Well, in some's opinion, it is the same thing when someone wants to think a certain way and, for example, wants this way to be without bias and control from his other ideas. I have my own idea of certain things here, but what we need to know here is that someone's actual ideas are bringing certain ideas automatically and it thus hinders him if he wishes to see something else (since his ideas will pop up). Then, here again, he'd need to know the other subject too so that not only his ideas from the other scheme would tend to come.

This debate is all about control of mind and the capacity forĀ  human to know. And it is espescially important if you base your life on a path that you came to by YOUR CONCLUSION (which are a result of your thinking). Personally, I am not anymore a "result of my thinking" and have kindda got out of the second aspect since I have no need to know everything. But it doesn't change the reason for this post, which was about why people get their ideas entrenched (which is stereotypical of old persons).

To some extent, it's force of habit. As a linguist, the concepts of evolution of meanings, erosion, and so on come so naturally to me that I am perhaps loath not to apply them wherever possible.

To some extent, it's a question of belief: humanity has developed the capacity to value the genes or culture of the group above the life of an individual, for obvious evolutionary reasons. When this methos develops links to or with other concepts, they become entrenced, and people instictively dislike breaking them down.
