XCH
I would like to recommend the following two websites if you plan to make a website:fortunecity.com - It provides free webhosting, you can have any number of pages in your site, you can use HTML (unlike some others, where you have to use some site-builder), and you only get one banner at the top of each webpage--no pop-ups.myownemail.com - If you need an email account for the website, get it here. Email gets sent very quickly; the myownemail website loads very quickly; and you get like 20 different domain names to choose from.
ken124578
20 Domain names?Sounds like a big SCAM to me (if it's free)Else you would be paying $15,95 X 20 = $319, excluding the costs for bandwidth usage and disc space.Beware of things that are too good to be true because they usually are, unlimited bandwidth without restrictions? nope, unlimited discspace? nope.you can have any number of pages in your siteMost free website providers give you the power of making pages limited only by discspace :Pyou can use HTML (unlike some others, where you have to use some site-builder)No HTML = no internet page ::) site builders are only there to help, go to raw HTML page and there you can code your site without a site builder.myownemail.com yourname@yoursite.com? sounds too good to me as it's free, if it's yourname@yoursite.fortunecity.com then i can understand but polarhome.com also offers a free email account just like some other providers.Fortune city also puts ads on your site and don't allow offline linking, they certainly scared me away when i was looking for a webhost. gryphon
fortunecity.com - It provides free webhostingFreewebs is a company providing totally free hosting without any banners or pop-ups.[ and sounds to good to be true, there is a catch .. no scripts of any kind.. . CGI / java exempted I thought :- ]You only need a domain name and link it to it and your site looks even more "real" with just the url above it and not the user.host.com/username/index.html thingy above it. ken124578
They only give you 8 pages with a stupid paragraphs system.
gryphon
You mean Freewebs or fortunecity ?
ken124578
free webs, they don't give you FTP either, nor do they support hotlinking (linking an image from your site to another site for example)
Jack Leaf
Mbnet is the best, mouhahah! ::)
quoudam72
Well we all know hotlinking is leeching bandwidth so you expect a bot to come and disconnect your link.
ken124578
www.polarhome.com allows offline linking, besides, it IS YOUR bandwidth which you could use untill it runs out, unless they're overselling but companies that sell over are bad and can run out of bussiness quickely. Jack Leaf
You can "leech" from MBnet. Come on, admit, that MBnet is the best! 8) :D :P :OOkay, I will stop spamming with my MBnet posts... ;D
gryphon
free webs, they don't give you FTP either, nor do they support hotlinking (linking an image from your site to another site for example)Freewebs has the possebilety to uload your files by means of an FTP client is you should desire that. And as far as I know there is no limit in the amount of pages you are allowed to upload, you can fill it up as long as you stay below the 40MB limit. ken124578
Can you CHMOD things? no? well, then forget about freewebs, no chmodding = no forums. They don't give you MySQL account either*
quoudam72
What about their (freewebs) paid accounts would SQL be avaiable then to the user?
gryphon
Can you CHMOD things? no? well, then forget about freewebs, no chmodding = no forums. They don't give you MySQL account either*That's why I mentioned the ownly downside, it doesn't support scripts of any kind ! Not all wedsite's need a forum. [ technically forum hosting is different from websitehosting ]Nor is the function to change owners and access right from files important when you are running a web site.Freewebs is kind of handy [ in my opinion ] for web site hosting. For forum, guesbook and file hosting it is not a good provider. Mayby I interpreted the topic wrong and should it have been a forum host site or anything else besides a web site. Then, I stand corrected. If it's mearly to run a web site. .. all those things you mentioned are of no relevance. To make it more absurd. If you should let a Microsoft engeneer look at your webserver to secure it. . after he has done the server won't even support the SQL, PHP, and CHMOD / CHWON options anymore.. ... Gobalopper
You can always find an old computer and setup a webserver on it. I did that with an old pentium 100 and it works fine.
ken124578
How about the licenses?
ken124578
Hey, why bother setting up a server while you might as well download the internet :D
IxianMace
Then you can re-download it all over again as soon as one little webpage/site is modified... ::)
gryphon
How about the licenses? If you use Linux [ or some Unix versoins ] you can download your OS for free. So is the Apache webserver [ never used it myself for more then a few hours so don't really know if it's ok. Although knowing a very large percentage of the internet is running with it it can't be that bad can it ;)So no licenses sofar. They only com into play when you use licensed software. If you should want to use licensed software, you just buy it, make shure you get payed for your server, or in some cases even just ask them nicely.. ... ;) :-X
Gobalopper
Yep I'm just running FreeBSD with Apache as the webserver, no cost involved.
ken124578
As you've made numerous mods for YaBB SE and managed this site without Cpanel, could you give me some links to sites that have a good SQL tutorial? (not www.wschools.com as i don't understand it and they don't explain everything)
Gobalopper
I just took courses in it at university so the only things I learnt from are textbooks. Maybe goto a computer store and checkout some of their SQL books.
Anathema
Kens link doesn't appear to be working. Do you mean www.w3schools.com ?
gryphon
Ken's link is working for me. . it's directing me to a porn site. . as always. . no matter what I try to find .. I always get porn. . ..And Gob no ! Out of all the good Linux releases on the Net, Debian, Redhat and not to forget Solaris 8 . . you choose FreeBSD. ... :-[ sorry, I'll grow up again now ... :-X ]
Gobalopper
No Linux for me gryphon, especially Redhat. :)I thought about Solaris as that is what most of our computers at school run but I already had the FreeBSD disks. The only Linux versions I would install are Gentoo or Slackware but I figured I would try FreeBSD since two of the guys I work with highly recommend it as does our university lab admin.
