Jy is mos 'n skelem.

Whaaaa?

He he he! It's Afrikaans. It became an official South African language sometime in the 1930's. It was developed by the Dutch people living in South Africa. It is very similar to Dutch in most ways, one exception being that they don't use the letter "z" as often (in fact, they hardly use it at all).

What I meant was: Jy is mos 'n skelm (added in an "e" by mistake)

Direct translation: You are indeed a rogue (or knave). (Skelm here more means "low life" or some insult like that. I'm really conveying an Afrikaans expression, so it's difficult to translate.)

I'm not trying to be nasty (someone will probably get angry), but Afrikaans is sort of Slang Dutch. Did you hear of that computer mouse called a Boomslang. Boomslang is Afrikaans for Tree Snake. If you split the Boom and the Slang words. Apparently I think one of the designers was South African.)

I was never good at Afrikaans at school. So don't ask me to teach you. Ask a Boer. People from the UK may know who a Boer is. The British I think pronounced it "boo-a" (got this info from some TV program), but it is actually pronounced more like "boor" with a very strong "r". Boer just means farmer in Afrikaans. Anyway, I thought I'd just give you some information on South Africa.
