Dunenewt
What programming languages would I need to learn to make a 2D Platform game? One of my friends suggested Delphi.
number6
Delphi sounds good I guess if you don't want to learn a lot of programming language specific stuff. I have heard Blitz Basic is very good for making 2D games.I guess they call it Blitz plus now, here is the URL:http://www.blitzbasic.com/BlitzPlus/index.php
Cyborg
When would you need to start on this game?

ken124578
Never java...I know that cnc generals is coded with c++, perhaps you should learn c++?The best thing to do is register at webhostingtalk.com and ask for advice here, alot of great programmers visit that site and it's quite popular too! Apollyon
I remember good ole blitz basic. Pretty useful but a bit outclassed nowadays I think. Try www.clickteam.com and download Klick and play or The Games Factory, or even the Demo for IMSI Multimedia Fusion. Languages wise, Delphi is pretty good and quite simple to learn, but then you could even make a simple game in Flash.
Cyborg
Don't learn c/c++ only to make a game.It would take a very long time to even learn how to start.
Andrew
Use Qbasic! you can make games out of it. I have played many games with Qbasic. ;)
Acriku
What's wrong with Java? It's powerful, useful, and pretty easy to learn if you have experience with the concepts.
number6
I have to agree with Acriku-. Java is well suited for 2D gaming. There are many websites that have games written in java. The bonus of writing a game in Java is that it will be able to run on any machine that supports the Java Virtual Machine. Which would include Linux, Solaris, and Windows. Cyborg
My idea was that if you could wait, I'd have my gaming engine ready with easy scripts. That would be an el dorado for making games with...
Timenn
Java is good for 2D drawing. It is one of the things it is made for. Although Java is a bit untidy language (with all those '{' and '}') but it is easy to use.And Delphi Pascal is also a great idea. Know that Pascal was made a programming language for starting programmers, yet you can do very advanced things with it. The same counts for Delphi, which is in fact Pascal, but with better methods to make windows and such stuff. And of course, it is object orientated. Both languages compilers are free to download. You can download both Delphi and JBuilder (Java) at www.borland.com for free (you must make an account first)
number6
There is no doubt that Borland makes excellent programming tools so I agree that Delphi and JBuilder are good choices.
Gobalopper
Write it in Flash, its pretty basic compared to C or Java but you can do some pretty cool things with it.
Timenn
The problem with flash is that big programs might get very complex and hard to find out what is where. And the second thing is that it runs slowly on slow computers when you use advanced stuff ( < 300 MHz)But if you make your graphics in flash, then it won't take up so much space
Dunenewt
Ok, I want to make a game either like the early Doom games, or a 2D platform like I said earlier, possibly in the style of Commander Keen. Delphi looks the best option so far.

Timenn
In C or C++? You must know that those 2 differe much. But he means that he want a game a bit like Commander Keen, not with the same source.Delphi is an excellent choice.
Cyborg
C and C++ don't differ that much.C++ is actually C with extra functionality(hence the ++ :P).
number6
Having used both C and C++ I would say there is a big difference between the 2 languages. You can write C++ programs like a C program, but then you lose the benefit of using C++. If you used C before C++ this makes things even more difficult in my opinion.
