HI!

I have some problems with graphics when using wsock32.dll. Without it everything is working, but when i try to use it there appears a glitch in the main menu, like the one when your video card is overheating (some colorful lines and dots). When i make a screenshot (PrintScreen) and paste it to Paint, only the main menu is shown (not the glitch). I tried every possible compatible options, but they didn't work. I have no idea why it is happening and would appreciate any help in solving this problem.

WINXPSP3

DUNE2000 1.06

Thanks!

Ok, perhaps a funny problem to most of you.

For my friends and myself, I do a lot of prototype map making.

You might have seen some old maps on this forum.

But I trained and continued making better and especially bigger maps.

My maps have 2 layers these days. The basic hexagon field with black lines. But each hexagon is build up out of smaller hexagons with thinner grey lines, a black centre dot and 2 grey eights for numbering. All to be filled in with colour the bucket in paint.

I finished my 1 hexagon blanc and my 121 hexagons blanc yesterday.

Today 2 problems occurred to me.

1. Apparently the picture with 121 hexagons, that I am using is to big now for opening. Paint says, it doesn't support this kind of picture. The current picture is only 1.8 Mb while being PNG. I do know that I opened bigger ones in the past regarding bytes, colours and pixels. What might have changed?

2. Opening the same picture with Paint.Net works. But when filling in a colour with the bucket, the entire black hexagon is filled. The grey lines are completely ignored. Only the black dot in the centre remains.

Any one knows a picture editing program that doesn't screw things?

I am thinking of buying an SSD drive, specifically OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX30G 2.5" 30GB SATA II

Currently $159. $10 off and free shipping ($168 total). Was another $10 cheaper as shell shocker, but my ISP sucks so I can't do stuff, so I'm doing it at friends. Competitor is selling same thing for $200 with shipping, so this is a decent deal (remember prices are in Canadian).

From the review, it is one of best SSD out there (behind intels more expensive ones).

The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs and New Drives from OCZ

So from what I read there, ocz vertex is around twice as fast as the fastest hard drive you can buy (velociraptor). I just have your average 320gb hard drive bought in 2007 (made in 2006). So I would expect it to be 2-3 times as fast as what I have. I don't have much need for lots of gb, I have more need for speed, so 30gb is fine, and I'm on a budget. For me to buy a full new computer system, to make it worth while I would end up spending $800 ($500 would get me similar machine that I now have). So I figure spending $168 on something like SSD would be a nice incremental upgrade, and can be switched to another computer later on if needed. Ubuntu is currently using 15gb, but 6gb is virtualbox, so 30gb is fine for OS/programs assuming my hard drive is still able to run at same time to store/access large files/data.

Now, I have sata hookups (one power, and one data) not being used, so I could hook up an SSD. If I hook up SSD, I presume my hard drive would still boot up? I would have operating system and programs and most used files on SSD, and for large data that wouldn't really fit on SSD, I would keep on hard drive. So I could still access hard drive while using SSD? Say my music collection is on hard drive, I could listen to music (like how I use Ubuntu, and my music is on an ntfs partition)? With SSD and hard drive connected at same time, how does it know which device to boot from? I presume in BIOS I would set SSD to boot before hard drive, and SSD would have GRUB on it to select OS? Can GRUB detect operating systems on SSD and hard drive, so I still have winxp on hard drive and it stays there, I could boot to winxp?

My basic computer specs in case you notice a bottleneck that would make SSD pointless:

core2duo E6300 1.8ghz (low end/early core2duo)

intel g965 x3000 (decent intel graphics, much better than 910/950 series, but obviously no good for games made past 2004)

300gb HD

3gb ddr2

dvd dual burner

I'm guessing SSD don't use a lot of power (like say video card), so I shouldn't have to worry about not having large enough power supply (EDIT: uses only 2 watts!!). I frequently get power outages (say once per month). Does that corrupt entire SSD or just do similar thing as hard drive? Nothing to worry about since my HD went through dozens of power failures and it still works? I realize stuff I'm working on wouldn't be saved if it wasn't written to SSD/hard drive before power crash, and stuff being written would simply be shown as incorrect and eventually overwritten.

Since I have 3gb of ram, I could save writes by sending and keeping more in ram? In ubuntu I use preload which normally loads 500mb into ram on startup (on top of 500mb normally used, and the rest for cache). Reason for using preload is that loading most often used programs into ram at startup will make the startup time of program much lower (since it is in ram instead of hard drive). I guess with SSD this performance boost would not be as fast.

Thanks for any tips, and sorry for writing so much stuff.

EDIT:

oh and my hard drive probably has 8 or 16MB cache, while ocz vertex has 64MB cache. So another point of major improvement.

EDIT:

In order to flash the SSD with newest firmware, it says you need a "jumper". Apparently it does not come with one, and I have no idea if my computer came with one. Also no idea where to get one. Does this contain the jumpers needed? OCZ Vertex 120GB v1.10 MLC SSD Review

Hmm, maybe you don't connect something to the jumper? Just add the blue thing and then connect sata connections and firmware goes through sata? No idea. Hmm, looks like you do just attach the jumper, update firmware, then remove jumper.

EDIT:

Using PC wizard, I got some into on my current hard drive and comparing to SSD

Size: 320 GB SSD: 30gb

Cache: 7 372 KB SSD: 64mb (8x more cache)

Latency Access: 9711ms SSD: <1ms (not sure if comparing same stuff though)

Attached is PC wizard chart of my current hard drive to give read/write numbers.

ocz vertex has 250mb sequential read vs my 78mb. 3.2x faster

ocz vertex has 93mb sequential write vs my 56mb. 1.66x faster

Well, the last year I've really started playing pc games as stress relief but we only have one laptop and it has its issues.

So I am planning on getting a new PC to hook up to my TV as a (budget) joint home media/gaming pc.

I've done some research and figured out the following:

I5 - 3570k Processor

16 gb ddr3 ram (if possible in my budget)

128 gb ssd for OS and currentgames

500 - 750 gb HD for media/other programs

Two optical drives (haven't decided on DVD or if I should get one as blu-ray as well)

Cooling is an issue as all my computers have over heating issues in my house (no air conditioning and lots of dust) as well as noise as I intend for this to replace my dvd player.

I'd like a lay down tower (whatever they are called) or even a square one (???) to fit in my entertainment center.

But I'm stuck on graphics cards. I plan on using Nividea (staying away from AMD as every AMD device I've had has had overheating problems) but keep getting conflicting messages over what card I can get that fits in my price range and is still adequate. My budget is about $900 - any suggestions of what I shoud be looking for? Am I out to lunch with what I am lookign for/what I have to spend? I'd like to be using this for games for the next few years, recognizing that obviously I wouldn't be running them on max settings.

Any online stores I should be looking at? I have found computer in my price range but they either have too powerful a processor and too weak a graphics card or other similar issues (plus, no dual optical drives).

Any other suggestions?

I've been considering to start using a Linux OS for quite some time, and I have a rather old PC that would probably benefit from such a change. Since I'm new to the Linux operating system altogether, I've got a couple of questions hopefully you guys will help me to find answers for.

1. First off, what distribution would you recommend? My primary considerations are a smooth learning curve and, more importantly perhaps, that it will work on my very low-spec PC (256 Mb RAM). So far, Debian and Mageia have caught my attention as potential candidates but I'm not sure yet.

Perhaps I should seek an older build of a distribution to ensure that it works on my PC?

2. Once I make my pick, there's one more thing, namely, I want to remove the currently installed Windows version I have on that PC, but formatting the HD is something I'd like to avoid altogether. Is it possible to just "uninstall" Windows after another OS is set up in the system?

All and any suggestions, hints and information on these issues will be deeply appreciated.

I got this problem since last Thursday 9-1-13.

I use mainly Firefox as browser.

When I look for pictures in Google, I get the old configuration from long ago. 20 pictures each page with information on their sizes etc. You have to select pages. I believe this is what they call the basic view. It suddenly happened after some updates that I had to do.

Normally (modern days) you can see the pictures cramped together and you can get info by scrolling over them. This way you could have over 1000 pictures. You also have more advanced searching criteria. Which I greatly miss now. I liked looking for a theme in a certain colour. My windows Explorer actually still has this!

So something went wrong in Firefox. And I don't know how to fix it.
Hello chaps, I've been having a few problems ever since putting this newish rig together.

1. Sometimes on start-up the graphics appear corrupted (before windows boots), with lines running across the screen. When it reaches the windows start-up, the screen simply goes black and the computer must be manually restarted. Resetting the computer before windows begins loading (either by the reset button or ctrl-alt-del) always fixes the graphics corruption and allows the computer to boot normally.

2. Sometimes the computer seems to freeze up. The cursor still functions, etc, but no new programmes can be opened, no websites navigated to, and sometimes programmes cannot be closed either. Eventually Windows tries to close the nonresponsive programmes itself and usually fails. After a little longer a BSOD appears, along with the system's attempt at dumping the memory -- this appears to fail utterly (such that there are no helpful error logs available on my system, as far as I can work out). This freezing-up usually occurs (in fact pretty much only occurs) when browsing the internet.

I'm not sure whether these issues are at all related, to be honest. The first seems like it might be some kind of graphics card issue -- a dodgy connection or similar, or even just some dust in the slot. The second might be an issue with running Windows from the SSD, but it seems rather extreme for a simple SSD firmware issue or similar.

So any help at all would be much appreciated. Will provide any requested info as quickly as I can. :-)

Many thanks. DxDiag attached.

My 22" was only 1680*1050.

Any plans on buying stuff this year? Tablets? phones? accessories?

I'd say by end of 2012 tablets should be better priced, or at least twice as powerful as current stuff, making them much more attractive than original single core tablets, and most dual core currently. quads just came out.

Ok, so someone had to make this thread.

Very hyped up, and as far as I can tell it will only appeal to apple crowd, specifically someone wanting a larger iphone minus the phone and camera.

I'm gonna wait for netbook transformed into tablet.

Or when

This week I've been interested in reading reviews/info for the Eee box. It's the EeePC equivalent for desktops.

It's very small, uses 20 watts, and is mostly good for running one or 2 programs at once. A casual web browsing computer at best.

I was thinking if it goes on sale, I would probably pick one up to replace my currently used old computer:

pentium4 1.7ghz i845, 768mb sdram (yep, not ddr or ddr2), nvidia tnt2 32mb, usb 1.1. I figure the old tower uses 200 watts (processor uses 65 watts, then include 2 fans, video card, trendnet wireless usb, etc), so the power savings would be good. I have 20" lcd monitor.

This tower is currently only used to browse web, scan some pictures, type some things up, minor things, which would be the only reason eeebox would be suitable.

I also know someone else who has older computer: amd athlon xp3200+ 2.2ghz, via/s3g 64mb video card, 512mb ddr-sdram and is used for similar reasons as above. They have crappy 17" CRT, so would eventually need an LCD (I can't stand them anymore!).

newegg.ca eeebox retails for $375-400. I put in a price alert so if the price goes to $300, I might buy one.

dell.ca cheapest core2duo box is $509. No point in buying cheap pentium dual cores if getting a normal computer, and yes I know they will have better sales at some point.

So the eeebox is 25% cheaper ($100), and a little bit more powerful than the computers it could replace, and suitable for the computing needs of users. I presume the better intel video card/chipset and ddr2 ram gain outweigh possible processor loss.

Anyone have experience with eee box? Am I crazy for even looking at one?

Would I be better off buying a better tower for myself and selling/giving my current core2duo to the other person for cheap? Although I am trying to hold off on buying myself a new tower, because I'd rather wait until one comes with windows 7, or USB3.0, and I don't think I'd have the money to buy a decent $700-800 tower until 2010.

I'm not sure it happened, but I managed to get the windows defender virus on my laptop, and after a couple days, managed to get an anti malware program to clean it out. However since then, I haven't been able to load to regular windows. I'm on the laptop right now in safe mode with networking.

Every time it loads to regular windows it crashes after a few seconds of desktop to a bluescreen.

I have a ntbtlog attached, as well as a diaxdiag.

anyhelp would be great.

DxDiag.txt

ntbtlog stuff.txt

Well, I think this series of threads is going into it's 6th or 7th edition with the new year arriving soon. As usual the threads starts a month early for all your investments into hardware next year. So what plans - or maybe questions - do you have for next year?

I have decided to wait with my new PC until January for several reasons. First of them being that I'll move soon and leave this nice city. So building a PC right now is pretty unnecessary I guess although I'd like to have one over xmas. Another reason is money, because only after I have moved I can decide how much I can actually spend in detail on a new PC. Another reason is that the new 580GTX videocards are very hard to get right now unless you pay even more money - but this thing is expensive enough as it is so I won't do that. Also new AMD Radeon highend cards will hit the market shortly and I'm interested how well they do although I'm pretty sure I'll go with that nvidia card. But a new Radeon might come in handy regarding prices so waiting until January is probably not such a bad idea. And last but not least Intel will be releasing their new CPUs alongside a new socket in early January and I want to wait for them too. I just hope they will actually be available after their launch and mainboard reviews are up shortly afterwards.

This is what I'm planning to get as of right now (I don't need a new mouse, still have a X-Fi soundcard, good headphones, a microphone and HDDs for data story):

CPU: Intel Core-i7 2600K

Videocard:	Nvidia GeForce 580 GTX

System Drive: Crucial C300 RealSSD 128GB or maybe even 256GB

Power Supply: Enermax MODU87+ 600W ATX 2.3

Mainbord: don't know yet

Memory: don't know yet

Case: Lancool PC-K62 Dragonlord

Fancontroller: Akasa AK-FC-03

DVD-Drive: Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7260S, SATA

CPU-Cooler: Scythe Mugen Rev. 2 or Prolimatech's Megahalem

Other: WLAN-Card, Quickport Bay, Keyboard
