Wouldn't that be 69 B.G., making part 1 88 B.G.???

Sooo confusing.

Now let's compare the plot of the film and the no-ship plot of the novel. Just mind the spoilers.

- The factions involved (The Federation & The Klingons; House Atreides & Bene Tleilax) have an animosity towards each other, but are not in open war.

- The main character is known to have a personal quarrel with the other faction.

- An invisible ship is used to make the outside world believe the main character has fired.

- The incident takes place on strict neutral grounds.

- Rather than engage into combat, the main character chooses to face trial instead.

Though, admittely, there are a few differences:

- In the novel, a third faction is the culprit.

- The novel ends with the trial, while in the film it is a setup.

Still, it has always worried me, and I believe that Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson boldly borrowed the plot from The Undiscovered Country for their novel. Not that House Atreides isn't an adequate novel, I like it best of all the new novels, but I just wondered what others felt about it.

On this website it mentions two short stories that I can’t find: 

“Blood and Water” (stand-alone excerpt from House Harkonnen)

and 

“Freuen Justice” (Also published as “Nighttime Shadows of Open Sand” standalone excerpt from House Corrino)

I have bought the Kindle versions of House Harkonnen and House Corrino from Amazon. There are two different versions of these books so I bought both of them but neither of them includes those short stories.

I have read that both of these stories are included in an older edition of “Tales of dune” but on Amazon there is only the newer edition available that doesn’t include those short stories anymore.

My favorite option would be to buy these stories as an ebook. But assuming they are not available in that format is there a PDF of them online.

Alternatively I would also be willing to purchase physical copies of either “Tales of dune” or “House Harkonnen” and “House Corrino” that include them.

However I don’t want to those books that I already own digital copies from just to find out that they don’t include those short stories either.

so my question is can anyone on this forum point me in the direction of how to read those stories?

At the end of the former, Shaddam IV and Hasimir Fenrin were amassing a ghola army and contacted Irulan to plot against the Atreides empire.

At the beginning of the latter, Shaddam is simply mentioned to be dead and nothing is known of Fenring and the ghola army. The Corinnos are now led by Winsecia, who has a different assassination plot in mind. Did I miss something or is one of those unexplored threads in Dune that will probably be filled by another story?

I've read the first three books and some of the prequels... Much prefferred the originals but something about them something really really got me stumped...

Its the logistics of Muad'Dib's Jihad... How did he do it?

Now of what I've read I've gathered several things

- The Fremen population of Arrakis numbers 10 million

- Paul's jihad killed 61 billion citizens of the Imperium

Lets assume that 8 million of those Fremen are able to fight... and they ALL fight in Pauls Jihad(since every last Fremen, elderly old men and kids, can fight well) HOW the hell do they kill 61 billion people? With their crysknives? That means, assuming that they took NO lossse whatsoever, each Fremen warrior killed an average of 7,625 people in the Jihad... And as awesome as that sounds, I doubt that they could achieve that ration even against Harkonnen conscripts...

Now I understand that its probably more likely that with the death of Shaddam IV, the universe simply descended into chaos and tore itself apart... But the inclination in Dune Messiah seems to be that the Fremen swept from world to world largely undefeated... Frank Herbet seems to suggest this, that it was Paul & the Fremen vs. The universe

So I'm asking those of you who might have read all the original books or know the answer...

Was Paul's Jihad really a Jihad in the strictest sense? Did 8 million Fremen rip their way across the galaxy and crush the united lansraad forces and kill 61 billion people all by themselves?

Or (and I think this sounds more plausible) Did the universe descend into chaos... With the death of Shaddam, Did all houses of the lansraad fight amongst themselves in a bid for power in a massive civil war... In which the Fremen were really only the catalysts, and Pauld Muad'Dib was only able to retain power since he controlled Arrakis and thus the Spice... Hell, perhaps a few billion even died of Spice withdrawl because Paul needed to maintain control?

But now to the point.  In Dune, there is the planet Arrakis.  There is also the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam the IV.  Think on that... Arrakis... Shaddam... is it just me, or does anyone see a slight resemblence to "Iraq" and "Saddam" there?  Dune... a desert planet with a really valuable resource: the spice melange.  Iraq... a desert country with a really valuable resource: oil.

Has anyone else noticed these similarities, too?  Are they simply coincidence, or was Frank Herbert hinting at something?  Are there any other similarities that anyone else has picked up on, such as real-life references to House Atreides or Harkonnen?  I think that, coincidence or not, these similarities are quite potent.  Maybe there are undertones in Dune that we have yet to examine?

There's a 21st-season episode (the last episode with the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson) called The Caves of Androzani.  it involves a deserted, quazi-desert planet (there is no water per se, but there is boiling hot mud-tides in the underground caves) called Androzani Minor, whose cave network is the only source of a substance called Spectrox.  Spectrox, the horribly poisonous secretions of bat-like creatures, can be refined into an extremely valuable drug, which can effectively double the lifespan of a human being.

This drug is cherished by the populated world of Androzani Major, but mining of the substance is being hindered by an army of androids, led by Sharaz Jek, who was once betrayed by Morgus, the man who owns the monopoly on Spectrox mining...

First of all, the planet is a sand planet with nearly not water at all. Yep, but in the 22th episode there are sandworms. When they attack, one of the character shouts:

"Worms! Is this thing built on solid bedrock?"

The vampire Seras Victoria is given a large shell-firing weapon called the Harkonnen cannon. Or alternatively, Hellsing ARMS Anti-Midian Cannon 'Harkonnen.' Later, she is shown with a heavier version, 'Extra Long-Range Bombardment Firearm system for Localized defensive use "Harkonnen II."' Finally, the two can be used in conjunction as a grenade launcher of sorts, launching the two 'explosive incendiary grenade for wide-area field dominance "Vladimir." I can't find any pictures to verify this, but I believe that this last addition actually has 'Vladimir Harkonnen' written on the side.

Spice World

Really great format: Two hosts, one of whom has read the series several times, knows the expansions, the Dune Encyclopedia, and in-universe lore; the other host has never read the series and knows very little about it. Each weekly episode covers a chapter in the first book. It's fairly new - only six episodes at the time of this post - but it's a really good listen. It's a lot of fun to listen to someone discovering Dune for the first time, as well as more obscure knowledge from the other host.

Riding the Sandworm

Seems to be a sideline from a fellow who normally does a sports podcast, who had wanted to talk about Dune for a while. There are only two episodes so far, but the host is very down to earth and interesting to listen to.

Any other suggestions?

I hesitated to post it to one of the games threads as it has a lot do with licensing and other history that encompass more than just one individual game. There's also some great points as to why a remake of any of the Dune games is hard to do if not impossible at the moment.  This is a pretty fantastic video relating to the Dune universe as a whole.
