I am working on a little project at home. I am simply trying to convert a basic RTS game into a board game. If successful; I could turn all kind of RTS games into board games. (Warcraft, Starcraft, Supreme Commander, Warzone 2100, Command and Conquer, Dune 2/2000/etc.) I can even create completely new ones. Easier said then done. If the units are converted into pawns, so has the field of play or map as you will to be turned into a board. Real time disappears and can only be simulated by playing the turns simultaneously. The game that comes the closest to what I want to create would be Axis and Allies.
What has been done?:
Basic balancing (army versus army) has been done, tested in a program, tested on paper, tested with my cousin. Prize calculation, Armour, Damage, Number of shots per turn, Range and Speed are correct balanced. Also the number of different units for balance has been decided, with 5 variables it goes up, really quick. So limiting these is required before making a new "universe" to play in.
What I need to do:
Deciding on how the units will behave. In other words, a deeper determination on how the rules are put together for correct play. I want to put in as much possible strategies as possible.
So now I simply need to work on possible strategies and the object or rule's, that my board game requires for allowing such strategies. This will help me in deciding the main type of board game I am creating. I got the choice out of 5 and each require a different set of rules to get strategies done.
A simple example would be fighting at a choke point. In RTS games, units tend to attack in small numbers at a time at choke points. On a board it would be exactly the same, an entrance through a mountain. Only allowing fewer units in the small regions, and of course lots of units in a big region. Although on a board game players see this coming and wont fall for it. A defender can simply put a wall behind a choke point and secure that spot. Important for me to keep in mind is, not to put to many choke points on the board. Of course I allow air and extreme ranges to deal with these choke points. These kind of units are going to be a little bit more expensive.
Applying Meat and Support. In RTS games, you always put in front those, who can take a lot of damage. And put in the back, those who do a lot of damage. Now, how to make sure, this goes fair and square in a board game. If the board game resembles a normal RTS game like Dune2, then it would be 1 unit per square. You simple put the meaty ones in front, the weaker ones in the back where they still manage to do some damage on the front line. If the board game resembles Risk where you may only attack 1 region away and you have lots of units in 1 region. Then I need to apply the difference in range "inside" a region. Meaning, the more range a unit has, the better it gets protected by others. Between the Dune2 type and the Risk type, there are 2 combinations of these. And then it gets really complicated.
What I would like to see:
Now my question is, can you think of other common used strategy's in RTS games. And tell me about it?
I do have a list with 16 common used strategy's. Yet putting them here, does not trigger new ones. Maybe in a month or so, I post the complete list and tell how I deal with them for in my boardgame(s).

Nr1: -We will attack and destroy China!!
Nr2: -Sir, they're over 1.000.000.000!!!
Nr1: -Man, you're right!!! We are we going to bury all of them???
Simply a joke: don't judge it.

- Doctor Who
There's a 21st-season episode (the last episode with the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson) called The Caves of Androzani. it involves a deserted, quazi-desert planet (there is no water per se, but there is boiling hot mud-tides in the underground caves) called Androzani Minor, whose cave network is the only source of a substance called Spectrox. Spectrox, the horribly poisonous secretions of bat-like creatures, can be refined into an extremely valuable drug, which can effectively double the lifespan of a human being.
This drug is cherished by the populated world of Androzani Major, but mining of the substance is being hindered by an army of androids, led by Sharaz Jek, who was once betrayed by Morgus, the man who owns the monopoly on Spectrox mining...
First of all, the planet is a sand planet with nearly not water at all. Yep, but in the 22th episode there are sandworms. When they attack, one of the character shouts:
"Worms! Is this thing built on solid bedrock?"
The vampire Seras Victoria is given a large shell-firing weapon called the Harkonnen cannon. Or alternatively, Hellsing ARMS Anti-Midian Cannon 'Harkonnen.' Later, she is shown with a heavier version, 'Extra Long-Range Bombardment Firearm system for Localized defensive use "Harkonnen II."' Finally, the two can be used in conjunction as a grenade launcher of sorts, launching the two 'explosive incendiary grenade for wide-area field dominance "Vladimir." I can't find any pictures to verify this, but I believe that this last addition actually has 'Vladimir Harkonnen' written on the side.
Main character has a Dune poster in his bedroom
One episode is called "Chuck vs The Sandworm" and has the main character and his best friend dress up as shai-hulud for Christmas.
Another episode quotes the start of the litany against fear and has the main character trying to stop a traitor doctor by knocking out a false tooth.

This fix means that it is now possible to play as sub houses and select their units. Multiselect does not work you must move units one at a time like in Dune 2, but at least the game doesn't crash.
* Previously if you play as a sub house the game would crash when you selected a unit
* If your house index is invalid this patch defaults it to Ordos and does not crash
* NEW: Fixes the score calculation crash, note your displayed score will be incorrect, but it will allow you to progress through the campaign properly now.
* NEW: Other house sounds now supported in addition to the unit report sounds previously supported (e.g. Building Complete, Harvester Under Attack)
* This patch is only for Dune 2000 version 1.06
* Supports and enhances mods such as [aKa]FedaYkin's Mercenary mission

Small tut about installing it, as some subscribers & ppl kept asking me when is the bug-free version going to come out. And yeah I noticed that as well, mentioned it in the video

High resolution patch!
* Patch works on fresh/clean Dune 2000 (v1.06), English version preferred.
* Mods need to be made for original resolution and first be installed on fresh/vanilla Dune 2000 before patching.
* All you have to do is put the folder from the zip in the main Dune 2000 folder and run from within the folder "d2k_patch.exe".
* Always keep a (zipped) backup of a fresh/clean Dune 2000 game in case the patch goes funky or you want to try mods.
* Get mods and more stuff at http://d2kplus.com/ , like the mission select patch/mod.
Special thanks to N.Kindt and mvi.

Little hacker D2k Sardaukar has some news. I made a Python script that takes any .UIL file and can move all the elements so that they are aligned in the centre of 1024x768. I also made a script that takes Dune 2000 tga images and adds black borders to fit the 1024x768 resolution. There are however some small glitches. The black border I added doesn't put the original image exactly in the middle (vertically), also in contains some funky colours (which are I think tga settings that should not be copied). The pop-up text is still also at the wrong place (see: enter your name).
I also have a script that can take saved bmp files from GIMP in the X1R5G5B5 format. That's rather simple, but makes it possible to use GIMP for image editing.
I'm personally not a big fan of the big main menu of mvi because it's all stretchy (border images don't look authentic) and you need to do a lot of image editing also. So I prefer just to put all the menus in the centre and only have the gameplay screen be full resolution (1024x768 in this case).

You could have stormy weather too, with sand storms obscuring vision and damaging units out on the sand.
To have a good visuals for such complex weather effects, I need to have normal maps for every game sprite. It's a huge amount of work. But I am mad enough to do that.
To have a better understanding of how it looks like, check out this vid:

This is bad for Canadian exporters to the US, although it has been at 90 cents for a year and the economy is still growing. Unemployment is at 30 year record lows.
Last couple springs the amount of Canadians going south for vacation was quite big. Now with parity I'm sure more will be going. I wonder if tourist destinations in Mexico and Caribbean will be raising their prices because of the USD not being worth as much.

Glad to see you decided to keep working on it. I saw some of those "new methods" that he's talking about and they look and work great But i wont give more details if he wants to keep the surprise, anyway probably he has updated them since i last saw them.
Theres a larger project I want to release alongside the mod once they are both completed. The mod is currently about 75% done, but I haven't had the time to actively work on it lately. Rest assured, I have no plans to give up now
